Cinco De Mayo in Your Neighborhood

Philadelphians known all about independence, so we're right on top of celebrating Mexico's independence victory on May 5th. What's going on in your barrio? Read on.
Northern Liberties will see mucho margarita pitchers served, especially at Cantina Dos Segundos, where the Cinco de Mayo Art Show will feature work from DJ Luis Angel Cancel, Joey Knuckles of Philadelphia Eddie's Tattoo 621, Elena Nestico (DJ Lady Prowl), Daniel P Cordua, K Fish, and others. Drink that in while you're toasting with tequila.
Taco Riendo, the authentic taqueria titan of Old Kensington, is giving out complimentary Corona and tequila to customers. Their outdoor seating area should be the perfect place to tackle some salsa.
You'll want to see it to believe it, but the Cinco De Mayo Macarena Mob will hit the Piazza at exactly 6:30 pm, so make sure you're there.
Rittenhouse Square now has El Rey, Stephen Starr's Mexican diner, to raise a glass at on Cinco de Mayo.
For a real margarita without the typical boisterous crowd, you could ask for one at the Franklin Bar in Rittenhouse Square. You may not find it on the menu, but they KNOW.
In University City, you can always guarantee that there's a fiesta at Distrito. This Cinco de Mayo, they'll be celebrating all day. They're calling it "the best party north of the border...and west of the river." Doors will open at 11:30 am with drink and menu specials. DJs Adub and CSharp start at 9 pm. Don't forget your luchador mask.
Another Mexican favorite of ours is Jose's Mexican Food in the Loft District, perhaps one of the District's best secrets.
Can't make it out on May 5? Saturday's Cinco De Miro III at the Latvian Society is Miro Dance Theatre's aptly-named dance competition. Think of it as Dancing With the Stars, Cinco de Mayo style.

Friday Farmers Market at the Radian Plaza
We have some nutritious news for residents of University City. In June and July, there will be a weekly farmers market every Friday from 12-2 pm at The Radian Building at 3925 Walnut St. University City District has partnered with The Food Trust, The Rotunda and Inland American Retail Management LLC, to bring fresh produce and live music from the West Philadelphia Orchestra and Unidos da Filadelfia to the block. The Radian is the perfect social space to pull this off at, because it has such great foot traffic and a variety of retailers set there. We look forward to checking it out in June. Just add it to our list of quick things to do out West.

Stop by the Green Line Cafe for...an espresso! You don't have time for that leisurely coffee. The Green Line Cafe has three locations in University City, so chances are, you're only a few blocks away from one. You can also hit up the Hub Bub Truck, which pulls shots of Stumptown's Hairbender, for an immediate fix.

Hit up any of the food trucks if you are really short on time. They're quick, cheap, and delicious, and University City's food cart culture is one of the most diverse and largest offered in the country. If It Were Springtime in February
Let's pretend for a second that it's not Blizzardelphia outside. Where would I be? Living in Philadelphia for so long, in many different neighborhoods, I definitely have my favorite places that I don't make it to as often as I'd like. It may be the weather, the distance, or the time that keeps me away from my preferred haunts. Today? Let's blame the weather.

Spruce Street Espresso in Washington Square West is the coffeeshop that taught me about specialty roasters. It was here that I first tasted Counter Culture coffee and learned that you need never add sugar to a cappuccino if it is steamed correctly. The microfoam in their drinks was like nothing I had found before. They coaxed the sugar out of the milk and turned it into a luxurious drink. Though tiny, the shop expands when Faith Ortiz, speediest barista I know, throws open the window shutters and turns the sidewalk into an outdoor cafe that you'd find in Europe.

Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown is another warm weather pastime of mine. When I was young, the park was in need of some sprucing up and wasn't always known as the safest place. Now, it's clean with brilliant sunsets over the Delaware River and summertime music festivals and events. There is something so romantic about this little riverside retreat.

I know how some of you get intensely happy on Capogiro, and I'm no stranger to the Capo come spring, but my real spot is Yogorino. The less-crowded softserve yogurt shop swirls out a tart flavor that tastes incredible alone, but I like to add the pistachio dessert sauce. There's no better snack in Rittenhouse Square.

Walking to University City from my old neighborhood in the Art Museum was always a nice way to spend a late afternoon, when the sun was beginning to weaken. Crossing the bridge to go see or a movie at the Bridge Cinema or to have dinner at Distrito was just a quick trip. On the way back, I would take the bike trail along the Schuylkill River. The views are some of the best you can find in Philadelphia and really capture the city.
Another place I'd set out for, in finer conditions, is Pub & Kitchen in Graduate Hospital. The first time I went there I was with a food critic, the second time I was on a writing assignment, and still, I can never find anything bad to say about the place. It is exactly the kind of place that Graduate Hospital was crying out for, with a gorgeous bar and dining room, a rustic pub menu, and a crowd of well-dressed locals who are knocking back a post-work pint. The Pabbit (pig-rabbit hybrid) logo agrees. A nice, leisurely stroll on a spring evening from Center City will get you here.
