To Do: Frankford Fall Music & Arts Fest

We often talk about events happening along the Fishtown section of Frankford Avenue, known as the Frankford Arts Corridor, but if you head further north on Frankford Avenue this fall, you're in for some musical treats. The Frankford Fall Music & Arts Festival is a new event this year, and will take place this Saturday, November 10th at St. Mark's Church on 4442 Frankford Avenue in Frankford, proper.  The all ages fest, brought to you by Flying Kite's On the Ground Program, will include a rockin' lineup with some local favorites (including  Betty Iron ThumbsBueno and the Goods, and Rock to the Future). Food trucks, beer, and an arts exhibition round it out.

Get your tickets here and make the trip to Frankford this weekend!

Feel-Good Wednesday Letter from NLArts!

We received a wonderful letter today from the NLArts program, a community arts organization here in Northern Liberties, thanking us for a recent donation. We learned that our donation had helped 6 children attend this year's camp free of charge for the 3 week program and received a photo of one of the art projects that they worked on. The portraits are now hanging in the Community Center window. Forget that pick-me-up pumpkin latte. Sometimes all you really need to feel good is to know that you helped nurture a child's growth and development in some way.

We want to thank the NLArts teachers and director Monika Kreidie for offering such a great resource to the community. For those of you who are curious about the program or making a contribution, visit

What’s New on 2nd Street?

Green Eggs, Palm Tree Market, Architectural Exchange, Liberties, Flowers by Denise, Arcadia, The Foodery, Standard Tap, Padmini, Philadelphia Framing, Hyder's Gallery, Art Star, 700 Club, Koi, Soy Cafe...Those businesses are just the ones I can recall off the top of my head that are located on the South Side of North 2nd Street. There are plenty more and we even have a few new ones to add on to the list. So if you are looking to open up a business, or looking to do some fun shopping, take a second peek at the New and Improved South Side of North 2nd Street. Looking better and better every year!

Philabundance “Cupcake Smash” Baking Competition: PYT On April 30th

367x540xcupcakesmashpostcard_jpg_pagespeed_ic_jee1idvi7jPhilabundance is joining forces with PYT, home to America’s craziest burgers, for one sweet event that is sure to smash hunger.

It’s a Cupcake Smash, a baking competition with a twist - challenging the area’s cupcake masters to think outside the box (or should we say bun) while they create, compete, and most importantly…give back to their communities!

Philabundance and PYT are challenging bakers to create cupcakes inspired by Tommy Up’s adventurous menu. It’s an opportunity for competitors to be truly original and create one of a kind treats that surprise and delight the senses.

We’ll be joined by the sounds of DJ Jay Yo on the ones and twos. Foodie Extraordinaire, Felicia D’Ambrosio, will be our celebrity emcee along with a panel of celebrity judges including Tommy UpAnna Goldfarb from Shmitten KittenThe Philadelphia Inquirer’s Michael Klein, & Phrequency’s Leah Kauffman. Our judges will select the winning cupcake, which will be featured on the PYT menu, for a limited amount of time.

Both amateur and professional bakers are welcome to compete. If you have an interest in participating, please reach out to our Cupcake Coordinator, Melissa Mae at [email protected], for more information.

Advance tickets are available online. All proceeds will go to Philabundance. Note: you must be 21 and older to attend this event.

Welcome to Shadtown

The third annual Shadfest hits Fishtown next week, and as Shad fever takes over, we begin to wonder: What if Fishtown had been called Shadtown?

What exactly is Shadfest? Well, this pretty much explains it.

This year's Shadfest is on April 23, but there are a couple of events leading up to the fishiest event in Fishtown, so why not make a week of it?

It all starts with the Fishtown Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 16, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt, at Penn Treaty Park. April 16 - 23 is the Official Shadweek, with a fundraiser for Delaware Bay Oyster Happy Hour at Johnny Brenda's on April 19, and ShadQuizzo at the Starboard Side Tavern on April 21.

This year's fest lineup includes Black Landlord, Spinto Band, and Rock to the Future on the Kids Stage. Then get your fill of Shad or other festival offerings from the many food vendors.

Have you ever tried Shad?

Tip Jar: Where the Sun Don’t Shine

Today is such a sunny day I thought It would be great to provide a few sun-kissed tips for today's Tip Jar:

1) When taking pictures inside or outside, the photographer should have the sun (or the brightest light source) to their back to create the most favorable photo shots.

2) Just because it is April and 70 degrees, don't think you won't burn in the sun. It takes only 20 minutes to burn so pull out the sunscreen and rub a little Coppertone on your nose, cheeks and shoulders. Hey, slather it all over if you know you will be revealing a little more skin.

3) Plants get sunburn too! So, if the sun and temperature where your indoor plants are located is going to shift, you may want to move your houseplants to accommodate the seasonal change. And, if you are shifting an indoor/ouddoor plant to the out doors this season, prepare to allow the plant some shade time while it toughens up.

When the season changes and we begin to enjoy all of the awesomeness of the sun, it is a good tip to begin to think more about where the sun does shine!
