Welcome to Shadtown

The third annual Shadfest hits Fishtown next week, and as Shad fever takes over, we begin to wonder: What if Fishtown had been called Shadtown?

What exactly is Shadfest? Well, this pretty much explains it.

This year's Shadfest is on April 23, but there are a couple of events leading up to the fishiest event in Fishtown, so why not make a week of it?

It all starts with the Fishtown Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 16, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt, at Penn Treaty Park. April 16 - 23 is the Official Shadweek, with a fundraiser for Delaware Bay Oyster Happy Hour at Johnny Brenda's on April 19, and ShadQuizzo at the Starboard Side Tavern on April 21.

This year's fest lineup includes Black Landlord, Spinto Band, and Rock to the Future on the Kids Stage. Then get your fill of Shad or other festival offerings from the many food vendors.

Have you ever tried Shad?

Tip Jar: Where the Sun Don’t Shine

Today is such a sunny day I thought It would be great to provide a few sun-kissed tips for today's Tip Jar:

1) When taking pictures inside or outside, the photographer should have the sun (or the brightest light source) to their back to create the most favorable photo shots.

2) Just because it is April and 70 degrees, don't think you won't burn in the sun. It takes only 20 minutes to burn so pull out the sunscreen and rub a little Coppertone on your nose, cheeks and shoulders. Hey, slather it all over if you know you will be revealing a little more skin.

3) Plants get sunburn too! So, if the sun and temperature where your indoor plants are located is going to shift, you may want to move your houseplants to accommodate the seasonal change. And, if you are shifting an indoor/ouddoor plant to the out doors this season, prepare to allow the plant some shade time while it toughens up.

When the season changes and we begin to enjoy all of the awesomeness of the sun, it is a good tip to begin to think more about where the sun does shine!

Need a Little Variety on Friday Night?

Now, normally, we'd never tell you to Lower Your Expectations.  But on Friday, April 8, you can certainly do just that at the 9th Annual Northern Liberties Variety Show at Johnny Brenda's.  Each $10 ticket will benefit the Northern Liberties Townwatch with performances from the Liberty Lands bag-piper, ukelele players, fire-eaters, and some stand-up comedy - just don't let those expectations get too high.

If you're not familiar with the Northern Liberties Townwatch, be sure to read our previous post below and find out how else you can help. You don't have to be a fire-eater to make a difference in the safety of Northern Liberties, we promise.

Get the Dirt on Urban Soil and Neighborhood Trash

At Soil Kitchen, you can...

A) Learn to Build Your Own Wind Turbine

B) Get Your Soil Tested and Learn How to Compost

C) Turn Your Table Scraps into Community Stock

The answer, we can assure you, is all three and more. The Soil Kitchen, a pop-up urban environment forum, is set to open in the empty kitchen at 2nd Street & Girard Avenue in Northern Liberties. From April 1 - 6, join biologists, geo-scientists, urban farmers, and other local experts for discussion on the above topics. Check out the schedule here.

So if you've ever wondered about the quality of the soil in your backyard and how to remove contaminants, or are curious about local food systems work, consider this your Urban Environmental Intervention.
