Decks & Patios: Creating an Urban Oasis in Philly

Turning your deck, yard, patio, or garden into an outdoor oasis might seem like a lot of effort. But we've found that a quick trip to your local garden store to find some inspiration and a little bit of dirty work are all it takes to turn around your seemingly savage garden or neglected deck.

If you're selling, it makes all the difference in the world to have a well manicured exterior even if it is a small deck. Outdoor spaces increase the property value, so sellers , play it up!

And to new home buyers: A lot of first time buyers have just purchased a home due to the $8,000 Obama Tax Credit Incentive that ended June 30th, 2010. Now you have an entire new home to decorate. Don't forget about the outside.

For existing homeowners and renters: With  the summer upon us and guests arriving, people want to show off their apartment, condo, or row home... . A beautifully appointed exterior space to enjoy the outdoors can create a warm and memorable experience for all.

Our deck used to look like this. We had amazing views of Northern Liberties, but no place to really enjoy them together.

I chose to visit City Planter, Lowes, and Pier 1 Imports. All local stores.

At Lowes I bought all of the plants on the clearance rack for $30 !

Pier 1 had a sale on the chairs and the pillows were 30% off !

We re-purposed a set in our storage unit that belonged to my late great aunt Anna. The table and chairs were freshened up by Carter Studios. Our deck was looking ready for summer. All it needed was some plants.

So our Outdoor Oasis 2.0 was well on its way. That's when we decided to add some finishing touches.  The table and chairs is a nice, whimsical setting for morning coffee.  But we wanted to add a more comfortable option for long-term lounging outside.  The deck chairs with cushions (found at Pier 1) added a bit of contrast and color in addition to some softness. The white flowers that we chose for the planters are now in bloom and coordinate nicely with the table/chairs combo.

The decking material was replaced with a weatherproof material done by our preferred vendor, VAR Construction.

Trust the experts at these shops to answer your questions. We've rounded up our favorite sources for planters and tools below.

Port Richmond

The Port Richmond Lowe's has consistently great deals on landscaping needs like mulch and garden tools, for the neighborhood that has many porch front homes, lawn spaces, and back yards.  It's where the community turns for their outside solutions. And don't forget to check out the clearance rack, like I did.

Lowe's
3800 Aramingo Avenue

Northern Liberties

We cannot get enough of  City Planter, the shop you should turn to when you really need some ideas that will set you apart from your neighbors and give you a truly unique outdoor haven.

City Planter
814 N. 4th St.

South Philadelphia

In South Philly, Pier 1 has lots of outdoor furniture to choose from, whether you are looking for wicker or papasan chairs, or even a swinging chair.  Pillows, cushions, tables, and umbrellas will help you build your new getaway, and it's all reasonably priced, too. One of the  managers at Pier 1, who lives in Fishtown, was super helpful and professional on a recent deck-shopping trip.

Pier 1
2310 S. Columbus Blvd.

Finally, our urban oasis comes together in its third transformation!

We love what we've done in a short time with our roof deck and now we have the whole summer to enjoy it.

Refreshing Passyunk Avenue with Park Space

Passyunk Avenue is full of pedestrians, but the diagonal pathway is also broken up by a bunch of intersections which make it more than a little confusing to those strolling along. Planning Collective is proposing a new way to develop the 6-way intersection at 12th and Morris Streets, one that would add 4,000 square feet to the urban environment. Not only would this mean a safer walkway for diners and shoppers along the Avenue, it could make for a greener sliver of designed land. Planning Collective is currently in the running for a $50K grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project, which funds great community ideas based on how many people vote for them.

Planning Collective's idea is called Reclaim Concrete for Park Space. It is currently in 75th place.  Check out their video which shows how cities like New York and San Francisco have successfully completed similar projects with busy intersections.  PC proposes the following:

  • Community outreach to ensure design addresses local needs and desires
  • Final design schematics and city construction agreement
  • Approximately 4,000 square feet of newly pedestrianized space for everyone to enjoy!
  • A blueprint document to help install projects like these across the City

We like the sound of this.

Voting will end on May 31. Go vote! Passyunk Avenue needs you.

Neighborhood Festival Watch: Mark Your Calendars and Stock Up on Sunblock

Rittenhouse Square

Bonus festival points if you attend all of these, but hey, no pressure. We'll see you out there.

On Saturday May 1, Walnut Street is blocked off between Broad and 19th Streets for the annual Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival, a rain or shine pedestrian-fest. It's the perfect time to try restaurant samples from Walnut Street's many restaurants that set up booths outside, or get a peek of local fashion at the all-day fashion show. Many of the stores have special sales and deals during the event. The live music and crowd ensures that Rittenhouse Square awakens any dormant aspects of spring.

Save next Saturday, April 24, for your North or South festival needs. If you're a Fishtowner, you've got to represent at the ShadFest at Penn Treaty Park. If you're in South Philly, stick to Passyunk Avenue for Flavors of the Avenue. You could do the civil thing and attend both, but we say? Follow your passions. Both promise lots of tasty local flavors and live music. Flavors of the Avenue is from 12 pm - 5 pm at East Passyunk Avenue, between Dickinson and Morris. Tickets to sample 20 restaurants cost $20 in advance/$25 at the door. The Crafty Balboa craft market will also be on Passyunk Avenue that day.

Passyunk Avenue

Yesterday, we mentioned Philadelphia Restaurant Weekend. But on Sunday, May 2nd, the Piazza will also host the Equality Forum's SundayOUT 2010. From 12 - 7 pm, the LGBT festival will fill the Piazza with live entertainment, a fashion show, Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus Cabaret, dance performances, and more, at $10 for adults and $5 for students.

What’s up with…South Philly

South PhiladelphiaSouth Philadelphia has some of the most unique Philadelphia culture in the city. The cheesesteak is king here, and it is the sports capital of Philadelphia, with the city's major stadiums. The legendary Passyunk Avenue has changed dramatically, with exciting new businesses that keep the scene lively. The Naval Yard has become a booming business section and serves as the headquarters for successful Philadelphian companies such as Urban Outfitters, Inc. and Tasty Baking Co. Holidays in South Philadelphia are always a bright time, with neighbors dedicated to decorating and lighting the streets with Christmas ornaments and lights. There are also many Italian bakeries and pizzerias.

How Philly Moves: A Moving Tribute to Philadelphia Dancers

How Philly Moves

Design concept by JJ Tiziou. (c) City of Phil

Do you remember what the current parking garages at the Philadelphia International Airport look like?

No, why would you? It's the same bland structure you'd find at most airports. How Philly Moves, a project from the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, aims to change that. They want to add 50,000 square feet of photographic work from West Philly artist Jacques-Jean “JJ” Tiziou to the garage. This would liven up the scene for over 32 million national and international travelers that pass by each year. For the half-mile-long stretch, Tiziou will choose images of dancing figures. He has photographed over 70 subjects so far, from amateur to professional, and will shoot another 60 dancers next month at the Painted Bride Art Center. Do you like to dance? Submit an application for your chance to be a part of the final design.

So how does Philadelphia move? Quite differently. From one neighborhood to the next, we find wide varieties of dancing. In Fishtown, we have the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, then we have the West African dance and drumming clubs in West Philadelphia. There's the Indigenous Pitch Dance Collective who combine many homegrown styles of dance, and the Kun Yang Lin dance company in South Philly, that bring Eastern Asian influence to Western contemporary dance style. We have hoop dancers and burlesque troupes, crowds of swaying bodies at dance parties, and the movement in the streets during rush hour. We know that Tiziou will capture some of this and make coming home from the airport a better experience.

Revitalized Neighborhoods in Philadelphia

Revitalized neighborhoods in Philadelphia

If you're interested in the Shops at Schmidts plan that we mentioned in yesterday's post, then make a point to read Inga Saffron's article in today's Inquirer about the revitalization of Northern Liberties and Bart Blatstein's influence and future plans.

We were most intrigued by the Reader Feedback poll, an insightful question that asks which neighborhood is the most revitalized in Philadelphia. While we see a lot happening in the Northern neighborhoods and in South Philadelphia, there's also no doubt that Manayunk has indeed experienced huge growth. An impressive percentage of voters agreed, but most gave it up for the Northern Liberties makeover. Fishtown and Old City both came in with with a steady stream of votes.

We'll keep our eyes posted on the totals, but who will you vote for? Are there any neighborhoods that you can think of that have barely experienced change and development at all? And which enclaves do you think are primed for some redefinition?
