Meet Your Neighbors: Bloom in Northern Liberties

Welcome to Bloom in Northern Liberties. This boutique is one of my favorites for women's apparel, jewelry, accessories, and gifts. I love shopping here. The girls who work here are beautiful and know their stuff. Their selections are unique and you won't be wearing the same clothing that all the other girls are wearing, plus, they have one of a kind jewelry that really lets you make that personal fashion statement. Trust me girls, you'll love this place! So, if you are ever in the neighborhood shopping, you must make it a point to visit Bloom at 1001 N 2nd Street in The Piazza at Suite 20, just across the walk from the renowned PYT, home of Tommy Up. Only in Northern Liberties. See you there!

Holiday Gifts for the High Brows, HEivas, and Homebodies!

Holiday Pollyanna dead-line closing in on your calendar? Got a "difficult to shop for person" on your gift list? Plagued by the the person who has everything, needs nothing, the scrooge, or just plain running out of inspiration for gift ideas this Holiday?

Well, we feel ya. So, we came up with a few cool gift ideas that you can shop for online on Black Friday, Cyber Monday or any time your heart desires. If these gifts don't work for you, then they will certainly inspire new ideas that will make your Holiday shopping a huge success this year!

The Imelda Marcos Wannabe

Zappos - Just say the word "Zappos" to me and I get that warm fuzzy feeling all over! Why not give the gift of Zappos in the form of warm and fuzzy slippers to your favorite guy or gal on your Holiday gift list? Here are two slippers under $50 but there are many under $30. The Zappos return policy is the best, too!

The Acorn Slipper Sock

The Acorn Polar Moc

The Drinker

Silicon Ice Cube Trays- This is a fantastic idea for the Cocktail Mixologist on your Holiday gift list. Silicon ice trays make fabulous ice cubes for the perfect drink. They come in all shapes and sizes. Many of these trays are  under $14.00. Here are a few I love.

Williams Sonoma
Cocktail Kingdom

The High Brow

Monogrammed Stuff - Try His and Hers bath towels or a monogramed pillow. Nothing says "I bought this just for you" quite like a monogrammed gift. West Elm has a monogram shop that is really convenient and offers a variety of gifts and prices.

The Locavore

Farmers Market Baskets - These are the coolest containers ever. In Philadelphia we have several great Farmer's Markets like Headhouse Square and the Rittenhouse Square Farmers Market. I am sure there is a market junkie on your holiday shopping list that will absolutely flip over this gift. Check them out at Jayson Home. They range from $20-$38 each.

The Old Schooler

The 7 Year Pen - Who even writes any more these days? These cute and anything but old-fashioned pens will inspire you to go back to the old days and write a note by hand! This is a great non-tech gift perfect for stocking stuffing or to give alone in a set of 3! At $7.50 each, you can buy a set for all of the people on you Holiday Gift List!

The Diva or The HEiva
(we don't discriminate)

Handbag Flat Iron
- For the vain and beautiful I have found one of the smallest flat irons sure to keep your fringe, waves and your straight locks looking perfect all of the time, $35.

The Desk Diva

Aphrodite USB Dock - This is the gift I want this holiday season. A fun USB dock, $46.

The Homebody

House Numbers - Ever drive by a house with really cool looking house numbers and wonder where they got them? Well, Chiasso has a few different styles on sale right now! What an awesome gift idea for an apartment or a house, or even as an interior decorative item. Buy them now at Chiasso for only $14.

The Nice Sado-Masochist

HIMALAYA Mat - This is NOT your girlfriend's YOGA mat, boys. This is literally a "Bed of Nails" and perfect gift for the one on your gift list that may be, shall we say difficult to shop for or just plain difficult! But seriously, this mat when used frequently is known to give relief of pain in the body as well as promote overall health. For under $30 on Amazon, it will make an interesting conversation piece and I will bet everyone at the party will want to try it. Namaste, my friends!

Tell us what the coolest gift idea on your shopping list is this year.

And here are few of our favorite shops in our own neighborhood, Northern Liberties. Don't forget to check out their Black Friday sales!

Meet Your Neighbor: Colors by Padmini

The corner of 2nd & Poplar has always been one of our favorite intersections - a portrait-perfect scene of activity by day or night. Now, there's an extra swipe of color with the presence of Colors By Padmini, a home decor and lifestyle shop that is becoming known for its "Window Concerts" and unique items from all around the world.

We stepped in not knowing what to expect, and found a delightful selection of fashions that were handmade in Thailand, a section devoted to some of the most beautiful bedding in every color you can imagine, and gifts and accessories that you can't find elsewhere in the city.

On Friday and Saturday nights, stop by to catch one of the performances - when you've got a giant window and the ever-eclectic Northern Liberties intersection audience strolling by, things are bound to get interesting. Welcome to the neighborhood, Colors by Padmini.

Spotlight on: Lodge

Living in Northern Liberties provides frequent and convenient access to some fantastic boutiques, venues, and galleries.  One of our current go-to spots nearby is a new face on the block: Lodge.

Situated right on the corner of Girard and 2nd Streets, within walking distance from the Piazza, Lodge is a cozy shop with a menagerie of goods for all types of styles and budgets. Owner Andrew Papoutsis has created a destination for shoppers looking for quality, unique, and affordable clothing and housewares. Displaying a mix of vintage pieces and local clothing lines, Lodge pays homage to American kitsch and modern design sensibility in a fresh way. Recent finds that we snagged? An amazing vintage butter dish, a classic Levi’s denim jacket, and two pairs of vintage earrings! Lodge provides clothing and accessories for both men and women, and supports local indie designers. A great spot for a last minute gift, or some self-indulgent spring shopping!

Young, Broke, and Beautiful… Meet Convenient, Cheap, and Fabulous!

We'll admit, we were a little confused when a discount goods store opened in Northern Liberties, which is known for its art galleries and boutiques. It's hard to find anything under five bucks these days, especially in our neighborhood. Can Young, Broke, and Beautiful Appreciate Convenient, Cheap, and Fabulous?

Five to One...and Then Some has proved useful a million times over for us since then, and we're glad to have it right there on 2nd St., for all of those last-minute needs.  Whenever we're having a party or wrapping a gift, we stop in for cards, ribbon, bags, paper plates and napkins, and other items, and of course, we always save money doing so!

It helps that the owners of the store, Cheryl Leuzzi and Jean Squitiere are probably the nicest women alive.  Walking into the store feels inviting and walking out feels like you just bought something from your best friend.

"We were both paralegals and loved this area. We actually found the spot on a Craigslist ad," says Squitiere.

Why a discount goods store?

"In a recession we felt that people wanted to feel like they were getting good prices. And we both love to shop!" she adds. Squitiere lives in the Northeast and Leuzzi resides in South Philly.

Here is just a small list of some handy items that Five to One carries:

socks
stockings
holiday accessories
birthday stuff
wrapping paper
bows
bags
tape
kitchen utensils
picnic goods
cards
tablecloths
toothbrushes
hair brushes
hair adornments
pens
crayons
note paper
toiletries
and so much more!
