Monday Night Bingo at El Camino Real

El Camino Real Bingo

El Camino Real Bingo

We went. We listened. We conquered. Most of us.

There weren't any models there, but El Camino was packing a fun, good-looking crowd, not afraid to boo those that called out "Bingo!" Every Monday from 9-11, the regulars come out for host RaeRae's speedy, no-holds-barred style of bingo, which comes with a few punches. Yes, if you decide to win here, she'll make you show your belly button or bark like DMX or even throw a couple of jabs at you in case your bingo ego gets too big. This saucy host fits in perfectly at the BBQ burrito bar in Liberties Walk, if you ask us. We also like that she moves fast, calling out numbers that you really need to listen for. Trying to have a heart-to-heart with a friend? Wrong place, buddy. Serious bingo is going on.

el camino real bingo

B-12 is good for you.

Have you ever played for a kite shape? The letter Z? Last person standing? El Camino Bingo will keep you on your toes. Prizes up for grabs include free drinks and gift certificates.

Philadelphia Fashion Week 2010: From Rittenhouse Square to Old Kensington

Philadelphia Fashion Week 2010Later this week, FBH Entertainment will present Philadelphia Fashion Week, with a neighborhood-spanning three day event that brings in designers from all over. Many are from the Philadelphia area. Designers include:

MonAri 1962
Ying Edge
Melani Von Alexandria
Ray Vincente
Nevets Couture

On Thursday, Banana Republic in Rittenhouse Square will host the Black Tie and Awards Ceremony, an invitation-only affair. Friday's ready-to-wear runway show will lead you to the Crane Arts Building in Old Kensington, a massive space that is a blank canvas for any event.  Imagine what they can do with it for this show. Saturday's Couture finale will happen here, too.

We suggest raiding Third Street Habit in Old City for something slinky and then having a glass of red at Bar Ferdinand in Northern Liberties before you head over to the 7 P.M. spectacle. Then you get to catch the fashion show that is a weekend night on Liberties Walk.

Purchase tickets online for Philadelphia Fashion Week 2010.

What’s up with…Old Kensington

Old Kensington is a revitalized community located north of Northern Liberties. Whether you call it Old Kensington or you tack on the letter "e" for that Olde Kensington effect, the ever-changing neighborhood has been through a lot.

The working class community is a haven for many artists, with the Crane Arts Building providing gallery and event space. There are some great taquerias nearby and good times to be had at the eclectic music venue and bar, Kung Fu Necktie. The view of the Market-Frankford line is both gritty and inspiring. The area has played host to new construction and funky architectural touches. Recent additions like the Piazza at Schmidt's and Liberties Walk are only a few blocks away, for those who prefer to live in a quieter part of town, but still want to have fun activities within walking distance. You got it.

The sun is not shy in this part of town, as the lack of tall buildings allows for an excellent view and a generous delivery of sunlight. We love Old Kensington, especially this hot new version of it.

More Valentine’s Specials in the City of Love

Valentine's Day in Liberties Walk and the Piazza is just heating up. Keeping in mind all of the Romancing the Walk specials that we wrote about last week, now we have some new additions to the menu.

At Bar Ferdinand, check out the "Dia de Valentino" $30 prix fixe brunch or the $65 & $75 prix fixe dinner menu. The offerings are posted on their website.

Darling's Diner will be selling heart-shaped cheesecakes in personal or full sizes. Try the Belgian Chocolate Mousse variety if you really want to woo somebody. They'll also host a Lovers Brunch and Lovers Dinner.

What happens when over 100 Philadelphia artists decide to celebrate Valentine's Day? The Group Heart Show at Jinxed/Toothless Cat Gallery in the Piazza on February 13. If you're the card-buying type, there's no shame in choosing one here, because there will be custom Valentines from each artist. Check out the list at Jinxed Philadelphia.

And if you're looking for something even less common, the Louella Press folks at Pressed 55 present the Letterpress Voodoo Kit. Pick one up now at Pressed 55 in the Piazza, 1050 N. Hancock Street.

A Night Out at Sonata on Liberties Walk

On a Friday night in Northern Liberties, we had a new Philadelphia transplant to show around the city, and no reservations for dinner. Big misstep. Even on this cold night, tables were full in all of the usual spots. We stepped into Sonata on Liberties Walk, hoping they could squeeze us in. The hostess apologized and we headed back outside.

A few seconds later, she ran back out and told us there was one table. Back into the warm BYOB we went.

Our guest, fresh from a small town in Virginia, went straight for the potato-wrapped black cod with sweet onion cream and hedgehog mushrooms. This fellow enjoys a nice meal that is refreshingly different from the offerings in his former zip code.

We also tried the spinach and mushroom ravioli and asked the chef for a vegetable plate (a way of challenging any kitchen and finding a nutritious option). We split the Shellbark cheese tart with grilled Seckel pear and frisee and arugula salad for a starter. Chef Mark Tropea delivered and even came over to our table to inquire about the meal.

Not only had we lucked out with a table at a one-of-a-kind Northern Liberties destination, our meal was quite impressive and the setting was perfect for catching up. We finished with coffee and complimentary chocolates. Oh, and those vegetables? They were cooked with as much care as everything else at the table.

Haven't been to Sonata yet? Have a go on Tuesday or Sunday nights for the $31 three-course prix fixe menu.
