Riverward Restaurant Week: Eatin’ Good in the Neighborhoods
Have you dined in the River Ward lately? The restaurants of Kensington, Fishtown, and Port Richmond are teaming up for a week of special menus that define the flavors of these neighborhoods.
We all know that sometimes the only way to understand a region is to dine where they dine and to brush elbows at the table next to them. So whether it's the pierogies of Port Richmond or the sinus-clearing Pho soup at Thang Long Noodle in Kensington, you can learn something about the people who live there and maybe even find a true gem that you'll return for.

Between October 3rd and October 10th, the following restaurants will featured prix fixe menus or special samplings of their cuisine. Do not miss out.
Green Rock, 2546 E Lehigh Ave
Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave
New Wave Café, 2620 East Allegheny

Ready for a Farmraiser Hoedown in Kensington?
These days, there's no need to travel that far to find a local farm. In fact, you don't even need your car and you'll be a block away from the Market-Frankford Line's Dauphin train station. Kensington's Emerald Street Urban Farm is throwing its 2nd Annual Farmraiser and Neighborhood Cookout on Saturday, September 18 from 2 pm to 9 pm. The event is sponsored by the East Kensington Neighbors Association (EKNA). All proceeds benefit the farm's goal to supply the neighborhood with fresh vegetables.
Now, unlike a traditional farmraiser, this event will have pizza from the farm's new cob oven and a full lineup of Philly bands:
Via Motive
TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb
Sour Mash
Ross Bellenoit
Toy Soldiers
Put on your favorite pair of boots, some trusty denim and flannel, and come see how Kensington raises the farm roof.
Food Co-op Comes to Kensington
When you're out and about this First Friday, take a break from art for a minute and turn your attention to food. The Kensington Community Food Co-op will be launching their membership campaign with a party at 2205 Frankford Avenue from 6 - 10pm. Take in 4 local bands and plenty of local beer all for the cause of local food. The KCFC will be discussing their project and membership opportunities. There is a $5 suggested donation. From the KCFC:
"Wouldn’t it be great to be just minutes from your favorite grocery store? Wouldn’t it be great to completely trust that your store has your best interests in mind? Wouldn’t it be great to have regular access to local fresh and organic foods at an affordable fair price? It will be great! A handful of your neighbors, people not much different than you, came together in 2008 with the mission to open a member-owned cooperative grocery store in the Kensington area."
The Co-op is finally coming to fruition. See for yourself this Friday and lend your support, Kensington.
A New Look for Frankford Avenue
This week, if you're wandering around Fishtown, you may notice a few changes taking place. That's because Frankford Avenue is currently undergoing some streetscape improvements. The major street, known as the Frankford Arts Corridor, will still be open to traffic, but some parking lanes will be closed. From Palmer Street to York Street, $3 million of city and federal funds will be spent to improve the lively arts mecca. New trees will be planted and sidewalks and lighting will be repaired to make your leisurely strolls a bit safer. We're quite familiar with the one-of-a-kind bike racks that Frankford Avenue is known for, but they'll be adding even more to encourage the many bike riders that populate the Avenue.
One notable change to the area that will bring some attention to the Berks El Station and Frankford Avenue in general, is the completion of New Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School, which Brownstoner Philly has reported will open this fall.
What this means for local teenagers is that they'll have another high school to choose from that focuses on creative development. Many Fishtown teens currently travel throughout the city to their secondary schools - now there's an option that will mean less time en route to their academic destinations. The school building will also meet LEED standards, which we could all learn from.

Philadelphia’s One and Only Art Hotel
Oh, where to stay if you love art and are visiting Philadelphia? Anywhere...our museums, galleries, sculptures, and performance venues are all over the place. So if you're in the Art Museum area, Old City, South Philadelphia, Northern Liberties-Fishtown-Kensington, or University City, you are probably feet away from an exhibit worth checking out.
Turns out, there is a place that we are absolutely proud to recommend staying at if you happen to be an artist, and it's called the Philadelphia Art Hotel. Where is it? East Kensington. One of our favorite up-and-coming neighborhoods just garnered even more of our attention. We saw it featured on Apartment Therapy and thought it was such an exciting idea.
Artists from all over are chosen to stay at the temporary residence to show their work. Their room is free. They have the sights and studios of Kensington and Fishtown to entertain them, the awesome new Leotah's Place to have coffee at, and the Lost Bar on Frankford Avenue to meet fellow creatives at. Because it's such an arts-heavy neighborhood, it's the ideal environment to be in.
The 3-story rowhouse is owned by Krista Peel and Zak Starer, who painted and decorated each room with art. It just goes to show what you can do with one of the larger homes that you can find in East Kensington. The rooms are unique and spacious and there's a backyard patio to hang out in. From the outside, the Art Hotel looks like a fun-loving residence (with yellow trim on the windows and a yellow door).
If you'd like to check out the resident work, visit the Events page to find an upcoming showing. If you are an artist and want to apply to stay at the Arts Hotel, inquire about a spot in next year's program.

A Giant Caterpillar in Old City
On a walk through Old City this evening we had our first sighting of one of the giant Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby vehicles. Next to Radicchio Cafe on 4th Street, we saw a group of crafty participants putting the final touches on their ride - a quite impressive one, at that. With colorful tubing rounding out the body and bicycles as wheels, it looks like a confident entry for tomorrow's annual Derby. This is no doubt one of the coolest things that happens in Philly each year. Do not miss it.
