Need a Little Variety on Friday Night?
Now, normally, we'd never tell you to Lower Your Expectations. But on Friday, April 8, you can certainly do just that at the 9th Annual Northern Liberties Variety Show at Johnny Brenda's. Each $10 ticket will benefit the Northern Liberties Townwatch with performances from the Liberty Lands bag-piper, ukelele players, fire-eaters, and some stand-up comedy - just don't let those expectations get too high.
If you're not familiar with the Northern Liberties Townwatch, be sure to read our previous post below and find out how else you can help. You don't have to be a fire-eater to make a difference in the safety of Northern Liberties, we promise.

The Mister America Pageant is Calling All Philadelphia Males

Are you Philadelphia's Ultimate Guy, or do you happen to know him? We urge you to enter Shmitten Kitten's Mister American Pageant and fight for your title on Thursday, May 27th at Johnny Brendas. Just pick a major Philly neighborhood to represent (Mr. South Philly, Mr. Northern Liberties, Mr. Fairmount, etc.) and apply here. You'll also have to submit a photo.
Participants will try to out-man the competition through a talent portion and the first date round where they must describe where they would take someone on a first date and what they would wear. Guys, you don't have to be single to enter. Make your significant other feel like the luckiest in the room.
What will you get for being crowned king of your neighborhood? Prizes include cases of Sly Fox beer, as the contest will be sponsored by Sly Fox, and other prizes to be announced shortly. Tickets to the event are only $5 and are on sale now at the Johnny Brendas site. Anna from the Shmitten Kitten blog will emcee, and we all know the sharp and lovely wit of Philly's dating expert is worth the cost of admission alone. It's time to show Philadelphia where Mister America lives.
More Hope for Google’s Ultra-High Speed Fiber in Philadelphia
Last night's Ignite Philly event at Johnny Brendas in Fishtown was particularly electric. That's because Philadelphia's Chief Technology Officer, Allan Frank, had some good news. Philly will be applying for the Google fiber experiment,
which we wrote about last month. Ignite Philly is an annual meeting of entrepreneurs to highlight the sharing of ideas in Philadelphia. Presenters speak for five minutes using slideshows.
One of our favorite Philly blogs, Technically Philly, was there and captured a video of Frank's speech.
If selected, Philadelphia could be on the trial markets for ultra-high speed network, which could mean speeds of up to 100 times faster than they already are. Frank, along with councilman Bill Green, are currently working on their submission to Google. What makes Philadelphia a prime candidate? Officials mention our research buffs over in University City and our wireless network infrastructure.
If you haven't nominated Philly yet, you can get involved at Google's Fiber For Communities site.
What’s up with…Fishtown
Fishtown is a northern residential neighborhood next to the Delaware River. The river ward has changed dramatically in recent years with its proximity to Northern Liberties and has drawn many students and artists to its small, triangular territory of rowhomes. The Market-Frankford line borders the neighborhoood on one side, with the river bounding it on the other side. Penn Treaty Park is one of the largest community spaces here. Johnny Brendas is a popular bar and music venue that is notable throughout the country. Girard Avenue has experienced strong growth in local businesses and dining establishments. On the other side of the neighborhood, the Frankford Arts Corridor is home to many galleries and small businesses.
The neighborhood is made up of rowhomes and small, tight-knit streets where residents come together for block parties and chat with one another from their stoops. You will find artists biking along the avenues or bands meeting up for coffee at a nearby cafe. The First Friday crowd from Old City now stops in Fishtown to check out the galleries and artwork displayed here. 2424 Studios on York Street combines offices, gallery space, and venues to give the community a creative hub.
