Tip Jar: Keep it Real with Real Artwork
The next time you're tempted to buy that mass-produced so-called "art" that you find at one of those home goods stores, think again. Just because it's cheap and your wall needs a little something doesn't make it a good idea!
For Cheap Art that you can Cherish, check out your local galleries. In Philadelphia, we are lucky to have an annual event for the penny-pinching art seekers out there. It's called Art for the Cash Poor and everything is priced under $199!
We've gone every year for the last few years and it is always a great time. The Crane Building is one of the most dynamic buildings in the Kensington South district. This area is also known as Old Kensington. But make no mistake, the Crane Arts Building in the most Southern part of Kensington has been a beacon of culture and advancement of the Arts that has really helped put the Old Kensington neighborhood on the map.
The Crane building is a converted industrial space that is now a facility that houses dozens of art studios, workshops, and gallery space for artists looking for a place to create, network, and show. This year's AFTCP art sale will run on June 11-12, with live music, food, and an outdoor vendor section. Everything is affordable and it is the one place you really can find that special work of art that you will make your home look like a million bucks.
Keep it real, people! There's great art out there at bargain prices.
Meet Your Neighbor: Colors by Padmini
The corner of 2nd & Poplar has always been one of our favorite intersections - a portrait-perfect scene of activity by day or night. Now, there's an extra swipe of color with the presence of Colors By Padmini, a home decor and lifestyle shop that is becoming known for its "Window Concerts" and unique items from all around the world.
We stepped in not knowing what to expect, and found a delightful selection of fashions that were handmade in Thailand, a section devoted to some of the most beautiful bedding in every color you can imagine, and gifts and accessories that you can't find elsewhere in the city.
On Friday and Saturday nights, stop by to catch one of the performances - when you've got a giant window and the ever-eclectic Northern Liberties intersection audience strolling by, things are bound to get interesting. Welcome to the neighborhood, Colors by Padmini.

Spring Designer’s Tip by Busybee Design
Spring is all about re-connecting with your senses, so stimulate them with whimsy! For the new season, we automatically lean towards bold, energizing colors like turquoise, green, and bright pink. Wake up your room with these vibrant shades in the form of an eye-catching pillow, a striking vase, or a chair in a dazzling pattern or hue. Even the simple switch to a new light fixture can bring in color and also add playful architectural elements.
Another way to brighten up for spring? A new work of art can make you view any room in a new light. Go for something fun like this Papier-Mache Deer with Floral Antlers. Or try a custom piece from artist Parvez Taj. He can create the print of your dreams and transfer it to bamboo, aluminum, or canvas.

Winter Designer’s Tip: Ruffle Those Feathers!
What are the design experts over at Busybee Homestore & Design Center feeling this winter? Feathers, Feathers, and more Feathers.
When they showed us what they had in mind for holiday decor this December, we had to agree: 'Tis the season for ruffling some feathers with fun embellishment and texture instead of the usual ho-hum decorations.
Dreamy, feathery ornaments will add both whimsy and natural elegance to your holiday. The neutral colors will work with almost any room and are a refreshing change from all of the bright reds/greens and flashy silvers/golds that many of us turn to.
At Busybee Homestore and Design Center, you can find Glass Feather ornaments (small – $7 extra large $22) and Feather Balls ($8) for your tree and mantle, Ostrich Feather Plumes ($9), and a Feather Headdress from Cameroon ($550). Feather Trees from Roost are a beautiful tree alternative (Busybee stocks both Roost Trees and Tabletop White Feather Trees, small-medium-large $13-$30). The feather trees are collapsible and store easily in your closet. Visit the shop at 734 South Street for your holiday decor needs before you start trimming that tree!

Fall Designer’s Tip: Go for the Glow!

Opening Tomorrow: Three Potato Four.

We love the look of a few choice antique objects placed in a contemporary setting. At Three Potato Four, a home decor shop that opens tomorrow in Manayunk, you'll find such items along with vintage hardware, prints, signs, and more. The shop, which started out online, is located in an old mill along Shurs Lane, to add to the charm. It will be open on Fridays and Saturdays and by appointment only.
Have a Home Decor Question? Apartment Therapy is in Philly with Answers.
You'll have to wait until Wednesday, when Apartment Therapy hosts a meetup at Mexican Post in Old City. We just saw on Philadelphia Weekly's Style blog that the all things home design site is coming to town. While we worship AT for their wide coverage, which gives us a sense of what everyone else in the country is up to, interior-wise, we do wish they had a Philadelphia section. We're not alone here. Every now and then we see clients or people we know that are featured on the site, and it's always fun to read and see pictures of Philadelphia dwellings.
What will they be doing at Mexican Post, besides sipping margaritas? They'll tackle your dilemmas in a Q&A session. Are you so excited that you just glanced around the room to find all of the potential things that are wrong with it? Good, now go seek some help. The event starts at 6:30 pm.
If you have a burning decor or design-related question any other time, leave it to us! Ever since launching our new real estate collective with Voila Design, we've been knee deep in color schemes, decor trends, and Philly's local resources for furniture and refurbishing. If we can't answer, we can definitely steer you towards the right person.
