Our favorite plant purveyor in Northern Liberties, City Planter, always has a quick solution for brightening up the sometimes-dreary, windowless urban bedroom, that too-small kitchen, or a neglected outdoor space. Trust us, we've seen it all...

Now, City Planter is offering a plant kit that will put some life back into any drab apartment.

The Create-Your-Own Living Wall is basically a giant plant holder with 10 spots for your plants of choice, depending on what look you are going for. Have a color scheme in mind? A location you want to emulate? Need something easy to care for? Book your appointment with City Planter and they'll help you create the perfect living arrangement (ha, ha). They also deliver, in case you were worried about getting it all home.

Today's local Philadelphia Daily Candy deal offers 54% off a wall of your own: $59 (regularly $129)  gets you more green for less green.

The Tea Party is in Northern Liberties!

City Planter Northern LibertiesWe always direct our neighbors to City Planter when they're in need of urban garden supplies and decor, but even if you don't have an outdoor oasis, the Northern Liberties shop is still a resource you can learn from.

If you didn't know, City Planter holds workshops quite often at their 4th Street space, and the upcoming events for this season have a little something for everybody. Green space or not.

This Saturday's Tea Party sounds particularly stirring to us. The Random Tea Room will join Sarah of City Planter to teach about tea and herbal infusions that you can grow indoors and dry yourself. The class is free, but you must RSVP for a glass and herbs.

Saturday, October 23, 11 am - Tea Party: Plants to Grow and Drink

Wednesday, November 17, 6:30 pm - Seed Paper Holiday Gift Tags

Wednesday, December 8, 6:30 pm - Living Ornaments and Holiday Arrangements

Decks & Patios: Creating an Urban Oasis in Philly

Turning your deck, yard, patio, or garden into an outdoor oasis might seem like a lot of effort. But we've found that a quick trip to your local garden store to find some inspiration and a little bit of dirty work are all it takes to turn around your seemingly savage garden or neglected deck.

If you're selling, it makes all the difference in the world to have a well manicured exterior even if it is a small deck. Outdoor spaces increase the property value, so sellers , play it up!

And to new home buyers: A lot of first time buyers have just purchased a home due to the $8,000 Obama Tax Credit Incentive that ended June 30th, 2010. Now you have an entire new home to decorate. Don't forget about the outside.

For existing homeowners and renters: With  the summer upon us and guests arriving, people want to show off their apartment, condo, or row home... . A beautifully appointed exterior space to enjoy the outdoors can create a warm and memorable experience for all.

Our deck used to look like this. We had amazing views of Northern Liberties, but no place to really enjoy them together.

I chose to visit City Planter, Lowes, and Pier 1 Imports. All local stores.

At Lowes I bought all of the plants on the clearance rack for $30 !

Pier 1 had a sale on the chairs and the pillows were 30% off !

We re-purposed a set in our storage unit that belonged to my late great aunt Anna. The table and chairs were freshened up by Carter Studios. Our deck was looking ready for summer. All it needed was some plants.

So our Outdoor Oasis 2.0 was well on its way. That's when we decided to add some finishing touches.  The table and chairs is a nice, whimsical setting for morning coffee.  But we wanted to add a more comfortable option for long-term lounging outside.  The deck chairs with cushions (found at Pier 1) added a bit of contrast and color in addition to some softness. The white flowers that we chose for the planters are now in bloom and coordinate nicely with the table/chairs combo.

The decking material was replaced with a weatherproof material done by our preferred vendor, VAR Construction.

Trust the experts at these shops to answer your questions. We've rounded up our favorite sources for planters and tools below.

Port Richmond

The Port Richmond Lowe's has consistently great deals on landscaping needs like mulch and garden tools, for the neighborhood that has many porch front homes, lawn spaces, and back yards.  It's where the community turns for their outside solutions. And don't forget to check out the clearance rack, like I did.

We cannot get enough of  City Planter, the shop you should turn to when you really need some ideas that will set you apart from your neighbors and give you a truly unique outdoor haven.

South Philadelphia

In South Philly, Pier 1 has lots of outdoor furniture to choose from, whether you are looking for wicker or papasan chairs, or even a swinging chair.  Pillows, cushions, tables, and umbrellas will help you build your new getaway, and it's all reasonably priced, too. One of the  managers at Pier 1, who lives in Fishtown, was super helpful and professional on a recent deck-shopping trip.

Finally, our urban oasis comes together in its third transformation!

We love what we've done in a short time with our roof deck and now we have the whole summer to enjoy it.

Creating an Urban Oasis? Think Local. Visit City Planter!

If you live in the city, you know that having a private outdoor space like a deck or patio in a condo or apartment is an incredibly desirable feature. Everyone wants a private little oasis to simply escape to. One of the top reasons we chose our condo was the outdoor deck but shamefully, we have done absolutely nothing with it. This summer I decided to outfit our little piece of the urban outdoors and turn it into a beautiful complement to our home.

My first stop on my mission to transform my deck was to City Planter. City Planter is a cool store located on 814 N 4th Street in Northern Liberties.  Their specialty is planters with a chic, citified style that I absolutely love. City Planter is locally owned which adds an even deeper level of greatness to the shop. Peter is the owner of the magnificent sanctuary and he offered me solid advice on deck-friendly shrubs that will stay green for me all year round. Carol and Julie assisted me in finding the right planters that worked best for my space and fit my budget. They even drilled holes in the base of the planters for me, complimentary!

If you have not visited City Planter on your way to brunch at Honey's Sit'n Eat, you definitely should make plans to pop by. If you feel a little uninspired by your patio, deck, or interior garden?  Then you definitely should pop by!  The City Planter store will transport you to a wonderland of bubbling fountains, unique pots & planters, and romantic garden accents. Their cool planters come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and will absolutely inspire you to "Create Your Uban Oasis" inside or out!

Here is a little of what you will see...

I bought 3 planters made out of plastic or a cement plastic mix which offered me the durability needed for a planter that will be outdoors all year round. The evergreen shrubs I chose to place in the tall vessels. They are slow growers that thrive in the sun with moderate water. I filled the rectangular planter with decorative perennial grasses that will act as a low wall dividing the long narrow deck transforming it into 2 cozier spaces. All I need now are some trailing accent flowers and my city garden will be complete!

Here is the deck before and after...

Graceful Gardens and Livable Landscapes in Northern Liberties

City PlanterIt's never too late to find your green thumb, but May sounds pretty good for City Planter workshops. On Sunday, May 16, join gardening pro Grace Wicks of Graceful Gardens for a veggie and herb-growing tutorial. You'll go home with a mini garden of your own and the knowledge to keep it going.  The class will run from 10:30-12:30 and will cost $20 for materials.

On Saturday, May 29th, learn how to nurture a container garden year-round with Maria Hasenecz of Livable Landscapes.  This residential landscape designer knows how to keep it low-maintenance and she'll help you find the plants that will work right with your space. Just bring in some photos of your outdoor setup and she'll give you some advice on where to go from there. There is no fee for this class. Just amazing insight.

Reserve your space for both classes at info@cityplanter.com.

Then invite us over for a garden party.

Cafe La Maude Energizing North 4th Street in Northern Liberties

4th Street Northern Liberties

The 800 block of North 4th Street in Northern Liberties is a continually flourishing neighborhood stretch. With the bustling brunching action at Honey's Sit n Eat expanding onto the sidewalk, the bursts of blooming flora and fauna outside of City Planter, and the eco-design happenings on the scene at Greenable/Greensaw, what else could this block possibly need? Why not a cafe with the windows drawn open, allowing the sunlight and street scene pour onto the french-style tables? Cafe La Maude is North 4th Street's newest inspiration.

With La Colombe coffee and a variety of lattes on the menu, plus decadent-looking in-house pastries baked by a former Le Bec Fin pastry whiz, we were told that salads and sandwiches will also be added soon. The cafe itself has a charming interior with marble tabletops and lots of handsome wood. Lookin' good, North 4th Street.
