Regional Land Use Program of the Year Goes to…the Piazza at Schmidts

Congrats to the Piazza at Schmidts for being awarded Regional Land Use Program of the Year by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, which celebrated its 9th Annual Celebration of Regional Excellence yesterday. Gloucester City News has a list of the winners.

We view the daily additions and changes that the mixed-use development has brought to the Northern Liberties neighborhood and surrounding areas. What we notice most is the influx of visitors and residents of nearby communities that choose the Piazza for its many events and offerings.  It is the location we decided upon for our office, so believe us when we say that every day is an adventure.

Revitalized Neighborhoods in Philadelphia

Revitalized neighborhoods in Philadelphia

If you're interested in the Shops at Schmidts plan that we mentioned in yesterday's post, then make a point to read Inga Saffron's article in today's Inquirer about the revitalization of Northern Liberties and Bart Blatstein's influence and future plans.

We were most intrigued by the Reader Feedback poll, an insightful question that asks which neighborhood is the most revitalized in Philadelphia. While we see a lot happening in the Northern neighborhoods and in South Philadelphia, there's also no doubt that Manayunk has indeed experienced huge growth. An impressive percentage of voters agreed, but most gave it up for the Northern Liberties makeover. Fishtown and Old City both came in with with a steady stream of votes.

We'll keep our eyes posted on the totals, but who will you vote for? Are there any neighborhoods that you can think of that have barely experienced change and development at all? And which enclaves do you think are primed for some redefinition?

Update on the Shops at Schmidts in Northern Liberties

2nd and Girard will look a little different later this year.

Oh, Pathmark, we can't wait for you. Phase 1 of the Schmidts site redevelopment has been posted and we are excited to finally hear that ground is breaking on the shopping center project tomorrow. At 3:30 P.M., developer Bart Blatstein will make it official.

The plans for the Pathmark Supermarket are sure to make residents of Northern Liberties, Old Kensington, Old City, and Fishtown quite happy: local, sustainable items, two stories, prepared foods to go, and a bank and a hardware store in the shopping center. Blatstein also wants to introduce The Residences at Schmidts, which will include 600 new residential units and a one-acre park. Look to late 2010 for completion.

While we love frequenting the neighborhood delis and markets like Pink Dolphin, the Palm Tree Market, Quince Fine Foods, and Almanac Market, we think that Pathmark will bring even more people into the Northern Liberties area. Sometimes you just can't find everything you need in one spot. We know we'll still head to the Palm for their delicious wraps and sandwiches and nobody can top Almanac when it comes to daily soup. Although Thriftway in Fishtown does well serving that neighborhood, it is simply too far and inconvenient for a lot of Northern Liberties residents. Both Whole Foods locations are even more awkward to get to. It sounds like the Northern Liberties Pathmark will be a great addition to a neighborhood in need.
