Tip Jar: Spring Cleanup Time!
Walking to the office this mild and sunny day, I was inspired to write my seasonal Tip Jar tip...clean it up for Spring!
With the windy days in Philadelphia, trash is blowing everywhere. In this video I remind homeowners and landlords to clean up their stoops and front walk area. With the warmer weather, a Spring Cleanup can really be a weekly event that you can incorporate into your weekly chores. Some folks in the Northern Liberties neighborhood do a great job keeping their street and front stoops clean. On the 800 Block on N Hancock, for example, the local neighbors have even created several flower boxes around unattractive areas like phone poles of which they will enjoy and tent all the way through the fall months.
Cleaning up may not be a lot of fun but it sure does create a really nice sense of community. Do your part this Spring and join the rest of Philadelphia and celebrate the 5th annual Spring Cleanup Day. For more information check out this website: http://www.phillycleanup.com.

Another Helping of Italian in Northern Liberties
Modo Mio. Paesanos. Monsu. Il Porto. Popolino? Italian-lovers, get out your BYO wine totes and say Cin Cin, because Peter McAndrews is readying to open his next Philadelphia-area spot at 501 Fairmount Avenue. The chef-owner has chosen the former Lafayette Bistro space in Northern Liberties as his location for Popolino, a Roman concept that will feature an antipasti bar and an emphasis on offal. McAndrews is also partnering with Stephen Flis, most recently a server and Resident Cheese Expert at the Fountain Restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia. Flis will man the front-of-house, and of course, there will be a cheese plate on offer.
Seeing as it's ever more difficult to snag a reservation at Modo Mio, Northern Liberties should be a welcoming host to another helping of McAndrews' inspired rustic fare. Popolino opens in early March.
Some of the menu highlights:
Fried Calamari with Dates, Hard Cooked Eggs, Mint and Garum
Veal Saltimbocca with Prosciutto and Fried Sage
Tavole Calde (or “Hot Table”) which is a staple in Roman Trattorie, a large table of room temperature dishes, consisting of house made salads, pickled or marinated vegetables, cured meats and fish
$40 Menu Turista, antipasti or the tavole calde items, primi piatti (pasta), secondi (main) and dolce (dessert)

Last month we found out that Arrow Swim Club would be undergoing a few changes this summer. New name, new management, and...new lower prices?
We received an email from the new North Shore confirming that Brian Nagele owner of philly2night.com and Kings Oak has indeed taken over the space for next season. The swim club will stay 21+, but membership fees will drop to $500 per person (from last season's $1,000). The season runs from May 1st through October 31st. Guest passes will cost $20 per day. Only 500 memberships will be offered for the 2012 season (100 have already been taken). Applications are now up at www.northshorebeachclub.com.

Meet Your Neighbors: Bloom in Northern Liberties
Welcome to Bloom in Northern Liberties. This boutique is one of my favorites for women's apparel, jewelry, accessories, and gifts. I love shopping here. The girls who work here are beautiful and know their stuff. Their selections are unique and you won't be wearing the same clothing that all the other girls are wearing, plus, they have one of a kind jewelry that really lets you make that personal fashion statement. Trust me girls, you'll love this place! So, if you are ever in the neighborhood shopping, you must make it a point to visit Bloom at 1001 N 2nd Street in The Piazza at Suite 20, just across the walk from the renowned PYT, home of Tommy Up.
