2011 Philadelphia Mummers Parade January 1, 2011 10am
Mummers Strut Up Broad Street, Leaving Behind a Trail of Glitter, Feathers and Fun
What better way to bring in the new year than watch 10,000 men and women dressed in colorfully lavish costumes strut up Broad Street? This year marks the 111th year for the Philadelphia Mummers Parade. The parade begins at 10am and begins in South Philadelphia in the morning and winds its way up Broad Street to City Hall approximately eight hours later.
Spectators are encouraged to leave their cars behind and take public transportation into the city. Those who drive should park in a garage. One of the best places to view the spectacle is from the judging stands outside City Hall, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Tickets for the City Hall Grand Stand performance zone are one sale at the Fairmount Park Welcome Center, 16th and JFK Boulevard, 215-683-0246 or the Independence Visitor Center on 6th and Market, 215-965-7676.
For sidewalk seating, arrive early and set up near a drill location, where marching String Bands and Fancy Brigades stop to perform. These spots are at the intersections of Broad Street and the following streets: City Hall, Sansom, Pine, Washington, Ritner and Shunk. If there's no space there, another option is to watch from a staging area: Broad Street and Washington Avenue (Comics, 10 a.m.), Broad and Moore Streets (Fancies, 10:30 a.m.), Broad Street and Oregon Avenue (String Bands, 11 a.m.).
So now onto some history:
Mummery traces its roots to ancient Roman laborers who ushered in the festival of Saturnalia by marching in masks while exchanging gifts and satirizing the issues of the day. In the 1600s, Swedish settlers to Philadelphia's outskirts honored Christmas by beseeching their neighbors for dessert and liquor by dressing up, chanting and shooting firearms.
The party eventually migrated to New Year's Day and evolved into a series of neighborhood parades; then, as immigrants moved to the area from Ireland and Italy, each group added their own cultural flair to the local customs. In 1901, the tradition began in earnest with the first recognized and judged Mummers Parade. The term "Mummer" is German and means "to costume or masquerade."
Cannot make it out to the parade? MY PHL 17 has you covered. Viewers at home can watch the Mummers Parade on MY PHL 17 with pre-parade coverage starting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2011.
Use THIS SCOREBOARD to keep track of of the comic, fancy and string band divisions as they strut!

Decks & Patios: Creating an Urban Oasis in Philly
Turning your deck, yard, patio, or garden into an outdoor oasis might seem like a lot of effort. But we've found that a quick trip to your local garden store to find some inspiration and a little bit of dirty work are all it takes to turn around your seemingly savage garden or neglected deck.
If you're selling, it makes all the difference in the world to have a well manicured exterior even if it is a small deck. Outdoor spaces increase the property value, so sellers , play it up!
And to new home buyers: A lot of first time buyers have just purchased a home due to the $8,000 Obama Tax Credit Incentive that ended June 30th, 2010. Now you have an entire new home to decorate. Don't forget about the outside.

For existing homeowners and renters: With the summer upon us and guests arriving, people want to show off their apartment, condo, or row home... . A beautifully appointed exterior space to enjoy the outdoors can create a warm and memorable experience for all.
Our deck used to look like this. We had amazing views of Northern Liberties, but no place to really enjoy them together.
I chose to visit City Planter, Lowes, and Pier 1 Imports. All local stores.
At Lowes I bought all of the plants on the clearance rack for $30 !
Pier 1 had a sale on the chairs and the pillows were 30% off !

We re-purposed a set in our storage unit that belonged to my late great aunt Anna. The table and chairs were freshened up by Carter Studios. Our deck was looking ready for summer. All it needed was some plants.
So our Outdoor Oasis 2.0 was well on its way. That's when we decided to add some finishing touches. The table and chairs is a nice, whimsical setting for morning coffee. But we wanted to add a more comfortable option for long-term lounging outside. The deck chairs with cushions (found at Pier 1) added a bit of contrast and color in addition to some softness. The white flowers that we chose for the planters are now in bloom and coordinate nicely with the table/chairs combo.
The decking material was replaced with a weatherproof material done by our preferred vendor, VAR Construction.
Trust the experts at these shops to answer your questions. We've rounded up our favorite sources for planters and tools below.
Port Richmond
The Port Richmond Lowe's has consistently great deals on landscaping needs like mulch and garden tools, for the neighborhood that has many porch front homes, lawn spaces, and back yards. It's where the community turns for their outside solutions. And don't forget to check out the clearance rack, like I did.

3800 Aramingo Avenue
Northern Liberties
We cannot get enough of City Planter, the shop you should turn to when you really need some ideas that will set you apart from your neighbors and give you a truly unique outdoor haven.
City Planter
814 N. 4th St.
South Philadelphia
In South Philly, Pier 1 has lots of outdoor furniture to choose from, whether you are looking for wicker or papasan chairs, or even a swinging chair. Pillows, cushions, tables, and umbrellas will help you build your new getaway, and it's all reasonably priced, too. One of the managers at Pier 1, who lives in Fishtown, was super helpful and professional on a recent deck-shopping trip.
Pier 1
2310 S. Columbus Blvd.
Finally, our urban oasis comes together in its third transformation!
We love what we've done in a short time with our roof deck and now we have the whole summer to enjoy it.

Walt Whitman Bridge Gets 4 Years of Repairs
Philadelphia's busiest bridge to New Jersey and certainly its most poetic, the Walt Whitman is up for a $128 million renovation project for the next four years.
While not the most traffic-friendly news that commuters want to hear, the 53-year-old bridge is in need of some re-decking. What will this mean for those that travel daily? Until the makeover is completed, the construction crew will take out one lane of traffic at a time in 2011. Steel decking and asphalt paving will be replaced.
As Walt Whitman once wrote, I accept reality and dare not question it.

Refreshing Passyunk Avenue with Park Space
Passyunk Avenue is full of pedestrians, but the diagonal pathway is also broken up by a bunch of intersections which make it more than a little confusing to those strolling along. Planning Collective is proposing a new way to develop the 6-way intersection at 12th and Morris Streets, one that would add 4,000 square feet to the urban environment. Not only would this mean a safer walkway for diners and shoppers along the Avenue, it could make for a greener sliver of designed land. Planning Collective is currently in the running for a $50K grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project, which funds great community ideas based on how many people vote for them.
Planning Collective's idea is called Reclaim Concrete for Park Space. It is currently in 75th place. Check out their video which shows how cities like New York and San Francisco have successfully completed similar projects with busy intersections. PC proposes the following:
- Community outreach to ensure design addresses local needs and desires
- Final design schematics and city construction agreement
- Approximately 4,000 square feet of newly pedestrianized space for everyone to enjoy!
- A blueprint document to help install projects like these across the City
We like the sound of this.
Voting will end on May 31. Go vote! Passyunk Avenue needs you.
