Opportunity Knocks for Exciting New Developments in Philadelphia

Pathmark at Shops at Schmidts[Inquirer: Developer stands to reap millions from state capital budget]

Before you get too riled up that yet another bigwig is going to get money when the rest of us are scraping to make ends meet, we challenge you to think of the potential good that will come on the coattails of folks who can make things happen.

If Pennsylvania's $4 billion capital budget proposal goes through, the neighborhoods of Philadelphia can expect some major development action as a benefit.

Tower Investments developer Bart Blatstein would be among the recipients, with about $100 million in funds earmarked for upcoming projects that would include:

  • A rehab of the State Office Building at Broad and Spring Garden Streets (apartments, shops)
  • A 45-room hotel with a banquet facility next to the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties
  • 86-suite boutique hotel at Second and Poplar Streets in Northern Liberties (with additional parking)

Our only thoughts are: Bring it!

We know that Philadelphia is long overdue in developing so many under-utilized parcels, buildings, and prime Real Estate for the growth and betterment of our city. When we see a developer with a successful track record turning a more or less blighted part of Philly into "The Piazza", we think more of the same should be encouraged.

We know that if successful developers like Tower do not flex their entrepreneurial muscles, if they do not take a chance following their investment hunches, who else will?

And though there will always be naysayers and mudslingers, we know so many others will follow in Tower's footsteps spurring new jobs and opening doors to opportunities.

A Promising Week for Philadelphia Planning

art museumLast night's meeting at the Festival Pier revealed details of the Central Delaware Master Plan. Accessibility, building development, and a visit from Mayor Nutter all gave hope for a riverfront gathering space that would appeal to Philadelphia's burgeoning identity as a green city.

Yesterday also saw ground breaking on a project that will transform the Ben Franklin Parkway.  Streetscaping is under way with an addition of greenery and lanes that will be shifted along the Parkway for a more organized boulevard. Plans for the Rodin Museum courtyard include restoration and landscaping.  Sister Cities Park will receive an entirely new plaza.  According to the City of Philadelphia blog:

“Work will soon be underway, from JFK Plaza to Eakins Oval, to remake the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as a great urban thoroughfare worthy of the cultural treasures that sit along it,” said Donald Kimelman, managing director of Pew’s Philadelphia Program. “The exciting designs for the Rodin Museum and Sister Cities Park, as well as the parkway streetscape itself, are a testament to the creativity, hard work and cooperation of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Center City District, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the state and city governments. Those of us in the philanthropic community applaud their efforts and eagerly await a transformed parkway.”

Ready for more good city planning news? Temple's Rail Station will also receive some fine-tuning with a mixed-use development set for 9th Street between Berks and Norris Street. It'll include 164 apartments and retail space, which we know is needed in North Philadelphia and the Temple University area.  How's that for awesome?

Alright, Tuesday: make things happen.

A Photo Tour of Fresh Grocer in North Philadelphia

North Philadelphia is a section of the city that has been ripe for another supermarket. The North Broad stretch which includes the Temple University main campus, has shown particular need for a grocery store that could provide the community with organic produce and healthier items, all at a fair price point.

The Fresh Grocer at Progress Plaza on North Broad answered the call. The market, which opened in December 2009, received partial funding from the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative. First lady Michelle Obama recently visited the store while in town to promote her campaign against child obesity, "Let's Move!" She commended the Fresh Grocer for its nutritious selections that appeal to children and stopped by the store's smoothie bar for a strawberry banana smoothie.

While some refer to the neigborhood as Templetown, it's not just college students who live here. The area is home to many families who are excited to have a full grocery at their doorstep.  The supermarket not only means fresh food access, it also means jobs for locals. Fresh Grocer even provides a ride home to customers that live within three miles of the store and spend $50 or more on their groceries. The bright, clean, and modern store is a huge asset for the surrounding neighborhood, inspiring further economic development and promoting a healthier lifestyle for residents.

You can even follow the socially savvy supermarket on Twitter through @thefreshgrocer, from which they link to nutrition tips and store updates. Click Continue Reading to view more photos.
