Opening Tomorrow: Three Potato Four.

We love the look of a few choice antique objects placed in a contemporary setting. At Three Potato Four, a home decor shop that opens tomorrow in Manayunk, you'll find such items along with vintage hardware, prints, signs, and more.  The shop, which started out online,  is located in an old mill along Shurs Lane, to add to the charm. It will be open on Fridays and Saturdays and by appointment only.

Revitalized Neighborhoods in Philadelphia

Revitalized neighborhoods in Philadelphia

If you're interested in the Shops at Schmidts plan that we mentioned in yesterday's post, then make a point to read Inga Saffron's article in today's Inquirer about the revitalization of Northern Liberties and Bart Blatstein's influence and future plans.

We were most intrigued by the Reader Feedback poll, an insightful question that asks which neighborhood is the most revitalized in Philadelphia. While we see a lot happening in the Northern neighborhoods and in South Philadelphia, there's also no doubt that Manayunk has indeed experienced huge growth. An impressive percentage of voters agreed, but most gave it up for the Northern Liberties makeover. Fishtown and Old City both came in with with a steady stream of votes.

We'll keep our eyes posted on the totals, but who will you vote for? Are there any neighborhoods that you can think of that have barely experienced change and development at all? And which enclaves do you think are primed for some redefinition?

A Sunday in Fairmount Starts at Mugshots

If it's quiet in Fairmount on a Sunday, that's because everyone is at Mugshots Coffeehouse. Med students cramming in one last hour of study, a deejay recovering from Saturday night, we're all here. And there's definitely some volume in the room.

The Fairmount Avenue hub expanded last year to accompany all of the locals that flocked there for lattes and bagels. They pumped up their menu and kept the dessert case full. On this particular afternoon, the one item everyone ahead of me seemed to be ordering was the chocolate peanut butter bombe from Vegan Treats.

But it's not just a cafe, either. Mugshots hosts film nights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7 P.M. They work with Equal Exchange to provide fair trade coffee, which you can buy at their shop in a bulk coffee section. Their local food buying club allows residents to pick up fresh farm food at affordable prices.

A second, smaller Mugshots serves Manayunk, just off of Main Street. It, too, has been a successful resource for the community there. Next, owners Jill Fink and Angela Vendetti hope to open a third shop in Brewerytown, at 2831 W. Girard Avenue.

We wish them luck in spreading the joy that is stellar coffee and peanut butter bombe to neighborhoods throughout the Philadelphia area.
