Tip Jar: Don’t Let the Walls Cave In on You, Paint Them!

Before:

Back to our powerful painting transformation over at 912 E Passyunk Avenue in Bella Vista.

We swapped out the red, which made the hallway appear narrow, for a widening gray. Ahh, much more spacious already!

Perhaps the most neglected part of a home is the hallway. Scuffs, poor lighting, bad paint colors all can make an already small hall space seem even smaller and claustrophobic.

  • Remember, dramatic color is great for your wardrobe but not always for your walls.
  • Avoid dark colors or colors with too much pigment. Avoid hanging too much artwork or oversized pieces in a small hall.
  • Add accent mirrors, light paint colors, and bright lighting to open up a hallway.

You Know it is Time to Paint when…

1) Your guests say, "Wow, these colors are definitely, how should I say it? Umm... Creative! Yeah . That's the word."

2) Your mother picks the ugliest painting at the Flea Market and says, "This would look great with your lime green ceiling."

3) The prospective buyer's Realtor leaves showing feedback like this, "The black and orange walls were too bold for my client's taste."

A fresh coat of paint or a new color can change everything about a room. We headed over to a home for sale in Bella Vista to see how we could transform this property with a little bit of color. We had received some feedback particularly about the colors of the walls, so we called on the experts at Busybee Design to do a color consult with us. They came to the rescue and we have no doubt that this property is going to look dramatically different after its color makeover!

The after photos will be posted next week. Stay tuned to see the power of a fresh paint job!

Tip Jar: Why Try Ply?

Here is a home remodeling tip that may make many of you traditionalists roll your eyes at me.

Plywood Floors.

That's right. I was just showing a client a property in Fishtown that had finished plywood floors instead of the more expensive alternative, hardwood. I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it looked. It was not the first time I had seen plywood floors as the main flooring material. I had seen painted plywood used in restaurants and artist studios before as well. In fact, The Triangle Theater Building in Old Kensington has one floor that is plywood, painted white, and it really makes a statement without impacting your bank statement, if you know what I mean.

Hey, if you don't like it, that plywood can become your sub floor for when you want to go with the more traditional hardwood or tile.

Plywood Flooring is economical, easy to install, and comes in a variety of veneers. When researching Plywood Flooring I noticed that there was some concern about the thickness and durability of the veneer as well as the amount of time it would take to sand and finish these large planks of wood. Either way, it is a good alternative that in the short term will save you money and create a unique look completely your own. So if you have a low budget, are a do it yourself-er, and are not encumbered by traditional trends, then Why not Try Ply?

Where’s Wainscoting? Northern Liberties.

One architectural trend that is openly embraced by Philly Dwellers all around the city is the historic look of Wainscoting.

Why is this old-fashioned wall art trend still loved and sought after by many home buyers?

People love it because it is Classic. While other trends have come and gone (remember daisy wallpaper and avocado refrigerators?), the Wainscot wall application is never out of style and always adds an air of sophistication and grace to an otherwise average room.

Take 410 W Master Street in Northern Liberties, for example. This home is a beautiful example of the application. We love the stately and exquisite details along the staircase and bordering the walls throughout this home.

Spring Designer’s Tip by Busybee Design

Spring is all about re-connecting with your senses, so stimulate them with whimsy! For the new season, we automatically lean towards bold, energizing colors like turquoise, green, and bright pink. Wake up your room with these vibrant shades in the form of an eye-catching pillow, a striking vase, or a chair in a dazzling pattern or hue. Even the simple switch to a new light fixture can bring in color and also add playful architectural elements.

Another way to brighten up for spring? A new work of art can make you view any room in a new light. Go for something fun like this Papier-Mache Deer with Floral Antlers. Or try a custom piece from artist Parvez Taj. He can create the print of your dreams and transfer it to bamboo, aluminum, or canvas.

Wanna talk more about color? Talk to us! For color consults or to purchase these items, please visit Busybee Homestore & Design Center at 734 South Street.

Old English is Written All Over The Walls in Fishtown

Wainscoting - that is.

Your next question may be what on earth is it and why is it all over the walls?

Allow us to explain.

Wainscot is a type of paneling that is applied to the lower section of an interior wall. It was originally a 16th century English wall application and its purpose was to protect from water damage and hide wall joints. And now? Well, it's just ornamental but it adds a bit of that Old English charm and it is often found in high-end homes creating and evoking a sense of European history. Wainscoting can give a room an instant touch of elegance and a certain appreciation for craftsmanship.

Where can you find it? The wainscoting inside 2011 Tulip Street in Fishtown is a perfect example of modern day use of paneling detail.

Please contact the Somers Team for more information. You can also check out some neat wainscoting examples here.

Size Does Not Matter When You Are in Love

TheSomersTeam

450 square feet, 2 cats and madly in love. That pretty much describes Chris and me back when we first met. I think we were so love struck that we did not even notice the tight quarters we endured. Chris's skiis were on top of the kitchen cabinets, the bike was a permanent peice of furniture which doubled as a coat wrack and extra seating. The bedroom living room, dining room, office, and study were one space! Get the picture? Things were tight.

We adored those days in the 450 sq ft Studio Condo in Old City. Looking back, it is amazing how small that place really was! But gosh, what great times all 4 of us had. That old studio condo came to mind when I was NYC earler in January and was introduced to an ingenoius furniture vendor that is perfecting the art of transforming small spaces.  Clei's built in furniture designs fold, flip, tuck, and slide much like the Transformers on the big screen but much more sleek. Hide away beds and desks can disappear out of site in a flip of the wrist. Very cool.

For you folks lucky enough to live in huge homes with formal rooms for all of life's individual activities, you may not understand the studio life style but you can certainly appreciate the brilliant design concepts being explored by this Italian furniture company.

Here are a few pictures from their catalogue:

As you see these rooms are pretty cool. Though do not let the title of this blog throw you. The size of your condo may not matter when you are in love but the size of your wallet certainly does if you want to buy one of the 40 custom built transformable ensembles. So, save your money all of you lovers out there and enjoy your small spaces.
