The Ben Franklin Parkways Gets a Cultural Boost with Moore College of Art and Design’s Museums for America Grant
Moore College of Art and Design has received a federal grant under the Museums for America program. The $79,138 grant will be used to showcase photographer Wendy Ewald's nationally acclaimed "Literacy Through Photography" work in Philadelphia. Part of the grant will also be used to fund the School District of Philadelphia in 2010-11 for the “Arts Rising” program, which aims to improve literacy and arts access for school-age children. The Academy of Natural Sciences has received a grant as well, meaning big news for cultural institutions along the Parkway in Philadelphia. As Stephanie is a graduate of Moore, we would like to congratulate the lauded center of learning for expanding the arts in Philadelphia. We know that the grant was well-deserved and we encourage you to check out Ewald's exhibit. Information is listed below.
Wendy Ewald - Secret Games: Collaborative Works with Children 1969 - 1999 is currently on view in The Galleries through October 16. In an exhibition spread across three galleries over five months, Secret Games showcases the scope of Ewald’s work and the powerful results of her collaborations with children. The exhibition features approximately 200 photographs along with video installation, a reading room and project documentation.

A French Fling in Fairmount
Bastille Day is one of our favorite events to celebrate in Philadelphia - who hasn't wanted to run away to France at one point or another? Luckily, the Bastille Day celebration in Fairmount indulges us on these whims each year.
We did say indulge. The neighborhood whips up French dinner and wine specials at participating Fairmount restaurants and bars, French film screenings, and the Bastille Day Street Festival, which culminates in the annual Storming of the Bastille.
From July 8 to July 11, it's like a mini fling in France.
July 8 - Fairmount French Fling Bar Crawl
The Belgian Café – 21st & Green
Bishop’s Collar – 24th and Fairmount
Bridgid’s Bar and Restuarant – 24th and Meredith Street
Jack’s Firehouse – 21st and Fairmount
London Grill – 23rd and Fairmount
Rembrandt’s – 23rd and Aspen
Urban Saloon – 2120 Fairmount Avenue
July 9 - Fairmount Goes French!
Have a French dinner and then prepare for an evening of cinema with the kids. Mugshots will be showing Beauty and the Beast at 7 pm and giving out free mini cupcakes with every French soda sold. The Eastern State Penitentiary will show Pepe Le Pew cartoons and the Hunchback of Notre Dame from 8 pm on.
July 10 - Bastille Day Street Festival
Tour the Bastille, watch the Fairmount Pet Shoppe Parade at 2 pm and the Tricycle Tour de France at 3 pm, and check out the many exhibits on Fairmount - including a selection of French books and wine and cheese tips. At 5:15 pm, there will be a Costume Contest.
Then, at 5:30 pm, it's time for the Storming of the Bastille. This year's Marie Antoinette will be played by Terry McNally, co-owner of London Grill. She'll declare "Let them eat Tastykake!" as thousands of Butterscotch Krimpet Tastykakes are sent flying into the crowd. Ah, a little bit of Philadelphia influence at last.
July 11 - French Champagne Brunch
Don't miss the French Champagne Brunch, an ode to all of your French-inspired favorites that you regularly brunch on, and try a bloody "Marie" at London Grill.

A Promising Week for Philadelphia Planning
Last night's meeting at the Festival Pier revealed details of the Central Delaware Master Plan. Accessibility, building development, and a visit from Mayor Nutter all gave hope for a riverfront gathering space that would appeal to Philadelphia's burgeoning identity as a green city.
Yesterday also saw ground breaking on a project that will transform the Ben Franklin Parkway. Streetscaping is under way with an addition of greenery and lanes that will be shifted along the Parkway for a more organized boulevard. Plans for the Rodin Museum courtyard include restoration and landscaping. Sister Cities Park will receive an entirely new plaza. According to the City of Philadelphia blog:
“Work will soon be underway, from JFK Plaza to Eakins Oval, to remake the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as a great urban thoroughfare worthy of the cultural treasures that sit along it,” said Donald Kimelman, managing director of Pew’s Philadelphia Program. “The exciting designs for the Rodin Museum and Sister Cities Park, as well as the parkway streetscape itself, are a testament to the creativity, hard work and cooperation of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Center City District, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the state and city governments. Those of us in the philanthropic community applaud their efforts and eagerly await a transformed parkway.”
Ready for more good city planning news? Temple's Rail Station will also receive some fine-tuning with a mixed-use development set for 9th Street between Berks and Norris Street. It'll include 164 apartments and retail space, which we know is needed in North Philadelphia and the Temple University area. How's that for awesome?
Alright, Tuesday: make things happen.
A Museum Without Walls in Philadelphia
I have a confession to make: museums in the summer give me claustrophobia. It's not that I don't enjoy the exhibits - it's just that I'd rather be outside, in the sunshine or the fresh air. Lots of air conditioning and I just find myself with my arms crossed, dreaming of the moment when I see the outdoors again. But we're a city of museums and fantastic art exhibits worth checking out, and I'm always game for First Friday. I needed a solution.
That's why Museum Without Walls, a new way to experience art outside in Philadelphia, sounds just like my kind of thing.
The audio program, from the Fairmount Park Art Association, launches on June 10 and will be available to the public for free. You can access a tour through your cell phone or online. Which makes it even more my thing.
So what exactly are these audio tours? 35 sculptures along the Ben Franklin Parkway and Kelly Drive will allow anyone, anywhere, learn a little more about Philadelphia's outdoor art. The great thing about our city is that there is art all around us, with outstanding sculptures and installations en plein air.
Next time you're taking a walk or even a run along the Parkway or Kelly Drive, listen to some art on your way.

You Have to Kiss a Lot of Frogs Before You Find a Love Burger
Get ready for another outdoor burger shack. Frog Burger opens on the Parkway in June, from Frog Commissary Catering. It will be outside of the Franklin Institute in the Art Museum area.
This isn't just any burger joint, however. Expect items like chilled gazpacho and grilled sweet corn with chili lime butter, in addition to burgers such as the Love Burger, which comes smashed between two grilled cheese sandwiches and special sauce. Whoa. Or go with a regular burger or a healthier turkey burger. Hot dogs and Chesapeake crab rolls are also up for grabs. Desserts include shakes with Philadelphia Bassett's ice cream or cake shakes made with Frog Commissary's legendary carrot cake or their chocolate "killer" cake.
Care for a beverage? Local beers like Fleur de Lehigh and Kenzinger will be available, along with red or white wine, as well as red or white sangria.
The burger shack warns that its burgers are so juicy, you may need a bib, but don't worry, because they'll be selling them for customers who want to keep neat. Or take a silly photo. They'll also use recyclable products and green alternatives in their packaging.
If you're coming in from out of town, the Franklin Institute parking garage will offer discounted parking after 5 pm for Frog Burger customers.

Take the Stairs: Philly is Always a Step Ahead
One of the first things that many visitors do upon their arrival in Philadelphia? They run up the Art Museum steps. It may be the most famous, but it's not the only set of stairs that keep us on an upward climb. Elevators and escalators are nice, but taking the stairs is a Philadelphian's real cardio, so we put together a list of places that make for hot steppin'.
- 12 Steps Down, 831 Christian St
There are exactly 12 (count em) steps down to this underground bar in the Italian Market. This is truly a neighborhood bar, with free pool on Mondays and Sing Your Life Karaoke on Tuesdays, making these the steps that you want to take.
- Anthropologie, 1801 Walnut St
The whimsical women's clothing and housewares boutique in Rittenhouse Square has a series of grand staircases that turn a shopping trip into a tour of flowy dresses, charming trinkets, and thigh-burning exertion. Yes, you will look fantastic in that.
- Philadelphia Magic Gardens, 1020 South St
South Street's mosaic garden from artist Isaiah Zagar has a visually staggering set of shimmering stairs made from ceramic shards, bottles, and other items. The labyrinthine tour is an exercise in inspiration.
- Society Hill Towers, 2nd and Locust Streets
The steps that lead up to Zahav and the Society Hill Towers are known as a shortcut to Headhouse Square and South Street. The climb doesn't end at the top, however, because there's a steep path leading through Society Hill ahead of you.
- Love Park, 16th and JFK Blvd
Love Park loungers know that the curved granite steps surrounding the fountain are better for sitting and people-watching. Leave the Art Museum steps to those runner types.
- Boyds, 1818 Chestnut St
The swank department store in Rittenhouse Square has a marvelous set to walk up - an old school marble staircase for the store that has been dressing up Philadelphia for over 70 years.
Art in Fairmount That’s Not in A Museum? You Got It
For one day only, you can find a Tuscan Sunset in Fairmount. OK, so maybe that Tuscan Sunset is the name of a cocktail with ROOT liquor that Rembrandts will be serving during the Fairmount Arts Crawl. Who isn't a sucker for a good sunset? It's the perfect start to an art-themed crawl.
Over 70 local artists will convene in Fairmount for the annual arts fair on Sunday, April 25. Each artist will present at a different venue, which encourages you to tour the businesses of Fairmount and see some really cool work in the process. We went through the list and found quite a few interesting pairings:
- Urban wildlife photography from Christian Hunold at Flying Saucer Cafe
- Wood-based scenes of Fairmount from Ryan Penn at the Belgian Cafe
- Topography photos of Iceland from Clem Da Vinci at the Wine School of Philadelphia
There will also be live music, dancing, and fun things for the kids to do - check out the website for the complete rundown.
